- 12 ounces whole-wheat penne rigate
- 1½ cups Gruyère cheese
- â…“ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
INGREDIENT NOTES:
SWEET ONIONS:
- We have to utilize the thin onion slices to form the indulgent and naturally sweet caramelized onion foundation. We have to slice them equally so they cook in the same amount of time.
WHOLE-WHEAT PENNE:
- Include the whole wheat penne to add fiber and satisfying texture. This penne rigate works properly as it nicely holds its shape in the savory sauce.
GRUYÈRE CHEESE:
- Add the Gruyère cheese to include the creamy texture and real French onion taste in the dish. Divide this cheese and add some to the pasta and use the rest to top it.
BEEF BROTH:
- Add the beef broth to form the savory foundation of this pasta sauce. We have to utilize the unsalted broth so we can include it as we like.
DRY SHERRY:
- We have to include the dry sherry wine to deglaze the pan, and it will add a light nutty taste which pairs nicely with the caramelized onions.
WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE:
- Add the Worcestershire to add depth to the pasta, and it will also provide additional rich flavor in the sauce.
PANKO BREADCRUMBS:
- Include the panko breadcrumbs on the cheese to form a crispy & light topping, which will pair nicely with this creamy pasta.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Add olive oil to a big pan and warm it over a moderate flame.
- Include the onion slices and salt and cook for twenty-five to thirty minutes till the onions get deep golden & caramelized.
- Include the thyme, ground pepper, and thyme and cook for one minute till it gets aromatic.
- Add the dry sherry, scrape the sides of the pan, and cook for two to three minutes till it reduces lightly.
- Now include the water & beef broth and bring to a gentle boil.
- Add the whole-wheat penne and Worcestershire sauce and mix.
- Decrease the flame to moderate to low and cook as mentioned on the pack till the pasta gets soft.
- Add one cup of Gruyère cheese and mix till it melts & creamy.
- Now heat the broiler and sprinkle the leftover cheese & panko bread crumbs on the pasta with oil.
- Put the pan in the broiler for two to three minutes till the cheese melts and the breadcrumbs get crisp & golden.
